Meaning

-고 싶다 attaches to a verb and says the speaker wants to do that action.

Form

  • Any verb stem

    stem + 고 싶다

    먹다 → 먹고 싶다

  • Polite present

    고 싶어요

    가고 싶어요

Examples

  • 한국에 가고 싶어요.

    I want to go to Korea.

  • 물을 마시고 싶어요.

    I want to drink water.

  • 오늘 쉬고 싶어요.

    I want to rest today.

Watch out

Mostly the speaker's own want

싶다 is for what you want, or what you ask someone about their want. For another person's desire, Korean usually uses -고 싶어하다. 친구가 가고 싶어해요.
