은/는

topic particle

Meaning

은/는 marks what the sentence is about. It often frames the topic, and it can also set up a contrast with something else.

Form

  • After a consonant

    은

    이름 → 이름은

  • After a vowel

    는

    나 → 나는

Examples

  • 저는 학생이에요.

    I am a student.

  • 오늘은 쉬어요.

    Today, I'm resting.

  • 커피는 마셔요. 술은 안 마셔요.

    I drink coffee. I don't drink alcohol.

Watch out

Topic, not the same as subject

은/는 names the topic. 이/가 marks the grammatical subject. 저는 학생이에요 talks about me. 비가 와요 says the rain is what falls.
